Candidacy for NYS Assembly 144th District
Statement: Michelle Roman
March 3, 2024
The former mayor of Lockport, Michelle Roman, has announced her candidacy for the New York State Assembly in the 144th District. Roman is a 27-year veteran special education teacher in the Holley Central School District.
“I am excited for the opportunity to serve our community in a new way,” said Roman. “I will fight in Albany to promote legislation for the hardworking middle-class people of our community. It is time that we put people before politics.”
Roman served as the Mayor for the City of Lockport for five years, from 2019 through 2023. During that time, her administration balanced the budget, reduced the property tax levy, improved public safety, and spent millions of dollars on vital infrastructure improvements. Importantly, during her time in office, Roman solved Lockport’s ambulance crisis by bringing back a fire department-operated ambulance service that proved to be a major revenue generator for Lockport. She was also instrumental in bringing the temporary emergency room to Lockport as a transition between the hospital closing and the new opening.
“While I was Mayor, Lockport faced an ambulance shortage,” said Roman. “I was proud to take the lead and work with both Democrats and Republicans, City and County leaders, and members of public safety and the community to solve this crisis. I will bring this type of strong collaborative leadership as our community’s next Assemblyperson.”
“As a schoolteacher for over 27 years I have watched the decline of our State’s education system,” Roman said. “We need smarter investment in our children’s education. They are our future leaders and workforce. I will fight relentlessly in Albany to improve education throughout New York State. The state legislature must stand firm in its commitment to full funding of public education.” “I am ready to work with you and be your voice in Albany.”
Roman is a resident of Lockport where she and her husband, Derek, raised their sons, Joshua Richter, and Derek Jr. She is the youngest of nine children of Bill and Katie Richter.
